The
Kavadi festival is dedicated to Lord Muruga
who is a favorite deity for the Tamil devotees.
It’s believed that the concept of
carrying a Kavadi to the Muruga temples
started when Muruga’s assistant carried
the Sivagiri and Satyagir hills, tied on
both sides of the Kavadi .Idumban was subsequently
made the Dwarapalaka of the Murugan temples.
Ever since this it is believed that the
devotees’ prayers would be heard if
they undertook the Kavadi on the way up.
Usually the devotees wear yellow dress.
The Palani temple is thronged by devotees
carrying Kavadis. The Kavadi festival is
during Taipoosam. The Kavadi festival is
characterized by the sound of “Harohara”
that is chanted and reverberated in the
air.
